Just when she reached the end of her resources...    What is it about Jesus that demands your attention?               How does he inspire you? When he lived in Galilee two thousand years ago, he attracted enormous crowds, who followed him everywhere he went. Throughout every generation, he has drawn followers. What sets him apart from everyone else? His love and compassion are exceptional. The most desperate or humble the person may approach him and expect to receive his love and compassion.   But he gives more than sympathy. He heals, restores minds and bodies, and by his example, reveals the character of his Father in a new light.   While Jesus lived on earth, how did he heal?   He performed miracles. How? While it’s impossible to know how he did them, it’s more important to realize he is God who can restore the people he created because his intelligence and power outs...

THE WOMEN AT THE CROSS.

Image
The Women at the Cross At noon, an intense darkness enveloped Jerusalem. The local authorities had crucified Jesus beside two thieves and inscribed above his head. ‘Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.’                        Jesus’ fate was sealed.    Or was it?   In the months before the crucifixion, a band of faithful women had followed the Master through Galilee, caring for his needs while he preached, healed, and raised the dead to life. Now, he hung on a rough Roman cross between two thieves and these perplexed, broken women stood at a distance watching their beloved Jesus die.   How could Mary, his mother, tear herself away? Helpless and overwhelmed, her son’s agony bound her to his pain. She had cradled him, a tiny babe in her arms, after his circumcision. Was this the meaning of Simeon’s prophecy?   ‘This child will cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has bee...

THE CAPTIVE AND THE COMMANDER

Image
THE CAPTIVE AND THE COMMANDER     We’d walked to the hospital to visit our daughter-in-law and meet our newborn grandson for the first time. After navigating our way to the maternity ward, the staff admitted us behind locked doors, and we entered the safe environment. My daughter-in-law held out her newly born son, and I cradled him in my arms. He opened his eyes and stared at me, my ‘Nanna’ voice strange to his tiny ears. I marveled at his long fingers and ten toes, perfectly formed in his mother’s womb. He whimpered. I cuddled him close, and he settled, but I suspected he was hungry. After a feed, he fell asleep in his grandpa’s arms. Our vulnerable newborn grandson trusted us and everyone around him to keep him safe. The maternity ward was his haven in a big, wide world, where he could begin his life journey.     An Israeli girl lived in Southern Syria. Wrenched from her family and her country, she was a slave of Naaman, the commander of the king of...

LYDIA, the merchant in purple cloth

Image
Lydia    was a seller of purple from Thyatira in Macedonia, the trade centre for beautiful cloth. The elite of the ancient world prized this fabric because of its expensive dye, secreted from hundreds of sea snails. As you may imagine, the time-consuming process was expensive, and the locals associated Tyrian purple with power and wealth. Today, purple is the color of kings and coronations.     One Sabbath, a group of women gathered on the plain by the river outside Philippi, where Mount Pangaeus rose to the town’s west. Lydia, a Jewess, and several women, met there to worship God. Paul, the apostle, and his missionary team had arrived in Philippi, and they also sought a restful location where they could pray. They discovered Lydia and her friends by the river.          This occasion reminds me of when I stood on a cliff as the sun rose over South Australia’s En...
